What is Lichen Sclerosus et Atrophicus?

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (often called LS&A or simply lichen sclerosus) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes lightening and thinning of the skin. Lichen sclerosus is an uncommon condition that can affect the skin anywhere on the body, however, it most often appears in the genital and perianal areas. It most often presents as shiny, white patches. The skin lesions can be itchy or painful and may cause permanent disfigurement if left untreated.

What Causes Lichen Sclerosus?

The exact cause of lichen sclerosus is unknown although it is believed that an overactive immune system or hormone imbalance may play a role. Anyone can develop lichen sclerosus, however postmenopausal women are slightly more at risk. Lichen sclerosus is not contagious and cannot be spread through sex.
